1 Communities and Urban Renewal

We use community vocabulary to discuss cities, neighborhoods, public spaces, and social problems.

pollution	Dirty or harmful substances in the environment
poverty	The condition of being very poor
walkway	A path for people to walk

2 Passive Voice

We use the passive voice when the action is more important than the person doing the action.

Structure

Incorrect: The park was build.
Correct: The park was built.

Transform the Sentences

1. The government built a new park.

3 Giving Opinions About Communities

We use opinion expressions to discuss changes and improvements in cities.

Expression	Example

4 Communication Styles

People communicate in different ways depending on the situation and their personality.

call	To speak to someone on the phone

texter	A person who prefers texting
caller	A person who prefers phone calls

Many people use social media every day.

5 Verb Patterns

Some verbs are followed by -ing verbs and others by infinitives.

Verb + ING

Verb + TO + Infinitive

prefer	I prefer to communicate face-to-face.
